This route is a combination of different types of habitats such as
areas of irrigation, dehesas and steppe areas.
The extensive rice fields receive
important winter concentrations of Common Cranes, Greylag Goose and several
species of waders, especially during the migratory passages, you
can also see other wintering birds such as Bluethroat, Water Pipit or Reed
Bunting.
In the periods of wintering and
migratory passage can be found large concentrations of waders as Black-tailed
Godwit, Ruff and other species such as Common, Green or Marsh Sandpipers,
Greenshank, Common Redshank and
Spotted redshank, Golden Plover, Dunlin, Little Stint, Common Snipe and many
others.
Other species of interest are Black-shouldered
Kite, Hen Harrier and Marsh Harrier that is very abundant in the
area during wintering, although
it also appears as a breeding stock, the Black Stork that occasionally appears
as wintering and forms important post-nuptial concentrations in nearby reservoirs,
with the arrival of spring are very frequent birds such as the Collared Pratincole
or the Gull-billed Tern.
The areas of plains host important
populations of steppe birds can be observed groups of bustards, little bustards,
Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Stone Curlew and flocks
of Golden Plover during the winter, as well as several passerines such as Calandra
Larks, Skylarks in winter or Short-toed Larks in spring and summer.
The
most outstanding bird species we can observe here are:
All year:
Great Bustard, Little Bustard, Stone Curlew, Black-bellied Sandgrouse,
Calandra Lark, Red Kite, Golden Eagle, Bonelli´s Eagle,
Marsh Harrier.
Winter: Common Crane, Golden Plover, Hen Harrier, Merlin, Short-eared
Owl and numerous waders and ducks.
Breeding
season: Montagu´s Harrier, Lesser Kestrel, Black Stork,
Pallid Swift, Collared Pratincole, Gull-billed Tern, Short-toed
Lark, Bee-eater, European Roller, Great Spotted Cuckoo.
